Liverpool are currently fourth in the Premier League, but have the chance to go joint-top on Monday.

Stan Collymore has told the Daily Mirror that only a top four finish would represent a successful season for Liverpool, and hinted that anything worse could be bad news for Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds are currently fourth in the Premier League table, but would move level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal if they manage to beat Manchester United on Monday night.

And while an emphatic win over Jose Mourinho’s men could see them move to the summit of the table, Collymore has suggested that Klopp may still have questions to answer if he does not capitalise on their brilliant start.

“A top-four finish,” he told the Mirror when asked what would represent a successful season for the Merseyside club.

“Could they win title? Yes. But in terms of what the minimum expectation is, bearing in mind the club have put so much faith in this guy — he has signed an extension to his contract already — top four and Champions League football for England’s most successful European club is an absolute minimum.

“If he finishes fifth I don’t care what any Liverpool fan says about the smile or the tempo, he was there to get them back to the top table of English football.”

While Liverpool have made a blistering start, they still face a considerable challenge if they hope to remain in the top four and maintain a title bid over the coming months.

All of the usual suspects have made strong starts to the campaign, while Everton and Southampton continue to impress. And inevitably, some of those teams are going to be left disappointed come the end of the season.

But if Liverpool can extend the run they have been enjoying lately, it would not be a surprise if they not only finish inside the top four but also put themselves right in the title picture.
