Stan Collymore has said that he does not think that Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United will sign Emi Martinez, a player Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal sold to Aston Villa in the summer of 2020.

While outlining the need for Manchester United to sign a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, former Liverpool striker Collymore has written in CaughtOffSide that he does not think that the Red Devils will move for the Argentina international goalkeeper despite rumours.

Martinez has been linked with Manchester United as well as Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

According to 90min in March, Tottenham are interested in signing Martinez from Villa in the summer transfer window.

Football Insider have reported that United are keen on Martinez.

Martinez is a former Arsenal player who could not make a huge impact at the Emirates Stadium and left for Premier League rivals Villa in a £20 million (The Guardian) deal in 2020.

However, since his move to Villa, Martinez has won the Copa America and the World Cup with Argentina and is now one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Now, Villa are a big and established club in the Premier League, but Manchester United are arguably the biggest club in England.

Having failed to make an impact at another Premier League heavyweights Arsenal, Martinez could be tempted to move to United and show that he belongs at the elite level.

However, Collymore does not think that United will bid for Martinez and try to sign him from his former club Villa.

Stan Collymore on Emi Martinez to Manchester United

Collymore wrote: “I don’t think Man United should go back to Dean Henderson, they need a clean break.

“There are enough quality No.1’s out there now, particularly those that are good with their feet for example.

“Those goalkeepers in the 24/25/26 age range where United can say we’re buying someone fresh and new and this is going to be our goalkeeper for the next 10 years.

“They should be looking up and down the league. I know Emi Martinez has been rumoured but I don’t know if he’s the sort of keeper that Man United would go for.”
