Nottingham Forest have announced that the club’s lease on the City Ground has extended by the city council, which means the Reds are now able to proceed with plans to redevelop the stadium and surrounding area.

The Championship club confirmed the news in a statement and added that central to this redevelopment will be the creation of a new Peter Taylor Stand and improvements to the Trentside area, Brian Clough and Bridgford Stands.

Forest plan to increase the capacity of the City Ground to 38,000, which would make it the biggest in the East Midlands as things stand, with Derby County’s Pride Park boasting 33,597 seats and Leicester City’s King Power Stadium currently at 32,243 seats.

In addition, the new Peter Taylor Stand will see the introduction of “world-class” facilities including a museum, a new club shop, a range of hospitality lounge options, and restaurants and executive boxes.

Work could start by the end of the 2019-20 season, and Reds owner Evangelos Marinakis said he wanted fans to “play an important role in the decision-making” when a public consultation starts.

The news prompted an outpouring of positive reaction online and one individual pleased about the update is Forest legend Stan Collymore, who posted the following message on Twitter:

Forest have enlisted the help of globally recognised architects Benoy for a project they describe as “born in Nottingham, designed in Nottingham, built in Nottingham, from and for the people of Nottingham”.
