James Milner has played at left-back for Liverpool recently.

Stan Collymore has written in his Boyle Sports column that Liverpool’s left-back problem is highlighted by the fact James Milner, a midfielder, is playing there.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is under pressure to replace Alberto Moreno after the Spaniard had a mare in the 4-3 win over Arsenal on the opening day of the season.

That performance came a few months after the former Sevilla left-back endured another horror show in the Europa League final defeat by his former club.

Milner played on the left-hand side of defence in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Burnley but it’s becoming increasingly clear that Klopp needs a recognised left-back.

The German manager has a little over a week in which to sign a solid alternative, but Collymore says the 49-year-old should have made that signing “way before know.”

“The boss knew he was a liability in the Europa League Final, so why play him and not discipline him PRE-MATCH against Arsenal as to stay home, defend properly and help his team?,” Collymore wrote for Boyle Sports.

“Milner? I love the lad, but if your back up left back two games in is a workhorse midfielder, then as a manager, surely that’s a position that Liverpool needed to seriously look at in summer, way before now.”

Germany left-back Jonas Hector was linked with a £25 million switch to Anfield this summer(Metro), but a move from Cologne is yet to materialise.
