Tottenham Hotspur broke their club record as they completed a deal to sign Tanguy Ndombele.
Stan Collymore has told The Sunday People (7/7; page 59) that Tottenham may have completed the deal of the summer by signing Tanguy Ndombele, while he slammed Arsenal for making ‘daft’ bids.
Spurs appear to have made up for lost time in the transfer market. Firstly, they completed a move for one of the most exciting talents in the Football League by signing Jack Clarke, and they followed that up by landing Ndombele for a club-record fee of £53.8 million that could rise to £62.8 million (via BBC Sport).
Meanwhile, Arsenal have made a much more low-key start to the summer, signing Gabriel Martinelli. BBC Sport reports that the Gunners made a £40 million bid for Wilfried Zaha at the start of the month.
And Collymore appears to have taken exception to Arsenal’s offer for the Crystal Palace star, and suggested that they have been put to shame by their North London neighbours this summer.
“While Arsenal make daft bids, hats off to Tottenham for doing their business the right way,” he told The Sunday People (7/7; page 59).
“Their club-record £55 million signing of Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele could be the capture of the summer window and was done under the radar.”
Of course, there is a long way to go in this window. But Unai Emery’s men are arguably going to have to go some way to get themselves in a position that leaves most suggesting that their squad is nearly as good as Tottenham’s.
And as things stand, it appears that there is every chance that Spurs will be the ones to claim the bragging rights once again by enjoying the much better campaign at home and in Europe.
