Stan Collymore has one criticism of 24-year-old ‘phenomenal’ Arsenal player

Stan Collymore has given his take on Arsenal and Norway international attacking midfielder Martin Odegaard.

The former Liverpool striker has said that Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard is a phenomenal player.

The talkSPORT pundit has noted that Odegaard is very good technically, and believes that if he signs a new contract with Arsenal, then it will be great news.

There is speculation that the 24-year-old is about to commit to his long-term future at Arsenal by signing a new deal.

However, Collymore does not think that Odegaard is good enough to be the Arsenal captain.

And, as you can read below, the pundit has given his reasons why.

Collymore wrote in CaughtOffSide: “Martin Odegaard is reportedly close to signing a contract extension at Arsenal. 

“If and when that is officially announced, that will be really, really good news for the Gunners.

“He’s been excellent since he joined from Real Madrid a couple of years ago, and with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season, making sure they do not lose arguably their best player for next-to-nothing is really smart from Arsenal. 

“Odegaard is hugely important to Mikel Arteta’s plans and project so by keeping him on board really shows the ambition of the club and where they’re aspiring to be.

“Odegaard was named the team’s captain last year, and while I think he’s a phenomenal footballer; he’s incredibly technical and easily one of the best midfielders in the country, I am not 100 per cent sure he is captain material.

“He doesn’t strike me as the type of player who is going to drag the others over the finish line. We saw that last season, or didn’t see it, I should say.”

Martin Odegaard a good captain for Arsenal

We believe that Martin Odegaard is a very good captain for Arsenal.

True, the 24-year-old is not always very vocal on the pitch.

You do not see Odegaard digging out players during matches or shouting at them.

However, just because you do not always talk on the pitch does not mean that you are not captain material.

Odegaard is a reliable player who lets his football do the talking.

He leads by example.

If Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta thinks that Odegaard is the best player to lead the team on the pitch, then the Emirates Stadium faithful should be happy about it.
