Rafael Benitez guided Newcastle United back to the Premier League at the end of last season.
Collymore, who is 46 years of age and also played for Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa among other clubs, has said that Benitez needs to learn to work with a chief executive and director of football if he wants to be a success at Newcastle.
“Even if Sir Alex Ferguson was getting the Newcastle job now, or the Manchester United job having done great things at Aberdeen, he would still have to accept there’s a chief exec and director of football,” the former England international striker wrote in The Mirror.
“It’s the same for Benitez. He has to evolve and the question is ‘Can he do it?’ He can, but only if he is willing.”

Benitez is a very good manager, but the Spaniard does like to control everything at a club he is at.
While that is certainly something commendable and shows long-term thinking, the problem is that things do not work that way.
Moreover, clubs simply cannot grant all the funds requested by a manager. After all, there is never any guarantee that even the most expensive of signings would succeed.
What Benitez needs to do at Newcastle is work with his bosses and compromise over the signings.
Newcastle will feature in the Premier League next season after winning automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.
