The Tottenham Hotspur boss made some questionable comments at the weekend.
Stan Collymore has written in The Mirror that he is disappointed in Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino divided Tottenham fans after Spurs’ surprise 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace in the FA Cup last weekend by playing down the importance of winning trophies.
The North Londoners had been eliminated from two cups in the space of three days, and the Argentine argued that silverware only ‘builds egos’ and suggested that consistently qualifying for the Champions League was a greater metric for success.
But the comments haven’t gone down well with Collymore who, despite admitting his affection for Pochettino, isn’t buying his rationale.
He wrote in The Mirror: “Mauricio Pochettino’s comments about trophies only building your ego are just an excuse. And I don’t like talking about Pochettino like that as I have more respect for him pound for pound than I do any manager in Europe currently.
“Although virtually everything Poch says I end up nodding my head in agreement to, on this one I was a bit disappointed.
“He should have said ‘I’m annoyed, I’m gutted, this is going to completely spoil my weekend and we wanted to win this one. We have a great tradition and history in the FA Cup.’”
A lot of Tottenham fans, who haven’t seen their side win anything since 2008, weren’t best pleased with their esteemed manager.
And Collymore is right. Trophies are key. Just one can lay the foundations for bigger and better prizes down the line, but it seems likely that Pochettino’s trophy drought in North London will extend to five years – unless they can win the Champions League or Premier League.
Pochettino’s side are nine points behind top-of-the-table Liverpool, and face a first-leg Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund in two weeks, with Harry Kane and Dele Alli set to miss out through injury.
