Stan Collymore believes that Eric Dier should be used in defence, and not in midfield.

Former Liverpool player turned football pundit, Stan Collymore, has found one major weakness in Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier’s game.

After his performance in the last two international matches, Collymore has come to the conclusion that Dier should be used as one of the back three.

He adds that Dier “doesn’t have the nouse” or the “pace” to step up as a top drawer defensive midfielder.

This is an interesting observation.

Dier is primarily a central defensive midfielder, but Maurico Pochettino has seldom used him in that position last season. Dembele and Wanyama are his first choice midfield pair at the middle of the park.

He has been used as one of the three central defenders in Pochettino’s three-man defence system, where Dier excelled.

While Dier was never a pacy player, he has always given the impression of being an intelligent footballer.

Defensive midfield is a very specialised position and it requires a solid tactical perception to carry out the task.

Do you think Collymore is right with his assessment of Dier?
