Former Liverpool striker turned football pundit Stan Collymore says that West Ham striker Andy Carroll hasn’t progressed since he left Newcastle United.
The 28-year-old was red carded against Burnley last week which has left his own teammates and his manager fuming, as West Ham played with 10 men and conceded a late goal.
According to reports from The Mirror, Carroll will be hit with a fine of £180,000 (his two weeks wage – £90k per week) for his red-card madness.
Carroll’s career has never taken off since he left Newcastle, with recurrent injuries mainly hampering his development. When fit and firing, he is still a very good striker, but he has had little output in the last five years to justify his talent.
Collymore says that in the last few years Carroll’s development has been trapped in a cycle – he comes back from injury, scores a few goals and then gets injured again.
The former Aston Villa striker notes that his sending-off against Burnley is just a different part of this known pattern.
He adds that Carroll hasn’t developed since he left St James’ Park, and that it is a “massive shame” given his talent.
In six seasons for the Hammers (including the loan spell and this current year), he scored 30 goals in the Premier League in 103 appearances.
“When I think of Andy Carroll I think of this cycle: he comes back from injury, scores two or three goals which get us musing about an England call-up, shows some impetuousness, then he gets injured again,” wrote Collymore for The Mirror.
“His sending-off against Burnley on Saturday was just the latest part of the pattern. I’d love to see him get his head down and show us what he’s really capable of, because this kid was a one-man wrecking ball at Newcastle, yet he hasn’t developed in the six years since he left St James’ Park, which is a massive shame given his talent.”
