Sunderland have lost their first two Premier League games of the season.
Stan Collymore has written in The Mirror that Sunderland’s summer business suggests that David Moyes lacks an extensive knowledge which managers need in the transfer window.
Moyes, who replaced Sam Allardyce at the Stadium of Light this summer, has brought five players to Sunderland so far – Papy Djilobodji, Paddy McNair, Donald Love and Steven Pienaar, while the Scot took Adnan Januzaj from Manchester United on loan.
McNair and Love also joined from United, Moyes’s former club, and Collymore has suggested that his decision to raid the Red Devils speaks volumes for the 53-year-old’s scouting system.
“He [owner Ellis Short] has gone for Moyes, whose signings of Adnan Januzaj, Paddy McNair and Donald Love suggests to me he hasn’t got the knowledge of players that a manager needs these days,” he wrote in The Mirror.
“It’s easy to raid an old club for players you have worked with, but all that says is, ‘I haven’t the broad brush, I haven’t looked all across Europe, South America and Africa’, and that would worry me as a Sunderland fan.”
It has been a difficult start to the Premier League season for Sunderland, who went down 2-1 to Manchester City on the first day of the season, before losing at home to Middlesbrough by the same scoreline on Sunday afternoon.
Full-back Donald Love looked particularly unsteady against Boro yesterday and that might be a concern going forward.
Moyes is of course a very good manager, and it’s very early in his Black Cats, reign, but a failed stint on Wearside would leave his managerial career in tatters, having taken the Man United job just three years ago.
