Newcastle United reportedly want to appoint Steve Bruce as their new manager.

Stan Collymore has suggested in The Sunday People (print edition, page 53, July 14, 2019) that Steve Bruce will not be a good managerial appointment for Newcastle United.

The former Aston Villa striker has outlined the reasons why the ex-Sunderland and Hull City boss is not right for Newcastle.

Collymore has claimed that if Newcastle owner Mike Ashley appoints the former Aston Villa boss as the Magpies’ new manager, then it will end in tears.

Collymore wrote in The Sunday People (print edition, page 53, July 14, 2019): “it will be a recipe for disaster if Newcastle United appoint Steve Bruce as their new manager.

“I’ve nothing against Bruce, who was a top player in his Manchester United days, but I’m not sure why Mike Ashley thinks he’s the man for the Toon after Rafa Benitez.

“Bruce’s stock isn’t very high after his stint at Aston Villa. Geordie fans seem unimpressed too and not just because he once managed Sunderland.

“He’s an old-school manager who is carrying some timber… and that creates the perception, rightly or wrongly, that you’re either a relic or aren’t taking your craft seriously. I reckon it is destined to end in tears.”

Newcastle United move

According to BBC Sport, Bruce has resigned as the Wednesday manager, having been appointed in the role at the Championship club only in January – although he did not actually take over for another month.

The Sun has claimed that Newcastle owner Ashley has paid Championship club Wednesday £4 million as compensation fee for Bruce.

“Ashley sent over the cash ahead of the appointment while Bruce and his staff walked out before it was accepted,” adds the report in The Sun.

Tough to follow Rafael Benitez

Benitez was superb for Newcastle, and under the Spaniard, the Magpies somehow managed to stay in the Premier League for the past two seasons.

It is going to be tough for Newcastle to survive in the top flight of English football next season.
