Former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore has written in the Bleacher Report that Everton will not suffer relegation from the Premier League at the end of the season.
The Merseyside outfit are currently 14th in the league table with 28 points from as many matches, just six points above the relegation zone.
Everton, who were fighting for a top-four finish in the Premier League last season, have a very good team, but performances have been disappointing throughout the season.
Collymore has backed Roberto Martinez’s side to remain in the English top flight for next season, but he seems to suggest that the Spaniard needs to change his style for the final months of the season.
“I don’t think Everton will get relegated because they have a decent run of games toward the end of the season,” the 44-year-old wrote in the Bleacher Report.
“But I wonder if Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright will just have a word with Roberto Martinez to remind him this isn’t Wigan—the free-flowing football is great but we need to defend properly.”
Everton do will play Villa (a), Sunderland (h), West Ham United (a) and Tottenham Hotspur (h) in the month of May.
In April, the Merseyside outfit will take on Southampton (h), Swansea (a), Burnley (h) and Manchester United (h).
The two Premier League games that Everton will play this month are against Newcastle United (h) and Queens Park Rangers (a).
There are some winnable matches between now and the end of the season for the Toffees, but then again, they have dropped points against teams they should not have this season.
Everton do have a side that should be competing for a European finish, but they are struggling because the players have not performed well.
It is time for the Everton players to step up their game and pick up points.
