Leeds go into their clash with Birmingham City knowing that a victory could well put them top of the Championship table should Cardiff City lose away at Preston North End this evening.

Thomas Christiansen’s men are currently two points off top spot with four wins and two draws coming in the league so far. It has been one of the brightest starts that the club has made to a new season, and the potential consequences of the result of their seventh game could not be in greater contrast to what was facing Garry Monk’s men one year ago.

After six games of the league season last term, the Whites were inside the relegation zone having lost four fixtures, drawn one and registered just the one victory – the 2-0 win away at Sheffield Wednesday.

That form meant that Leeds went into their clash with Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road – their seventh of the campaign in the second tier – knowing that a defeat would leave them in danger of falling to the bottom of the table, especially with Blackburn being the team situated in 24th place.

The gloom was lifted however, as a late Kyle Bartley goal saw Leeds claim a narrow 2-1 win that sparked a run of five wins in six games in all competitions to quickly ease any relegation worries – and a play-off push was soon underway.

And while Christiansen will have not wanted to repeat too much about Leeds’ start to last season this time around, he would certainly be delighted if his side could also win their seventh game, as it will leave them with a chance of finishing the evening at the table’s summit.
