St Johnstone’s Tommy Wright has been linked with a move to Rangers.
St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright
St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has told The Scottish Sun that he and his players are focused ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Rangers.
The Saints make the trip to Ibrox on Wednesday night, and will be desperate for a result having lost 2-0 at home to Kilmarnock on Saturday afternoon.
That result was a fourth defeat in the last seven games for St Johnstone, and also came after manager Tommy Wright suggested that he could be interested in joining Rangers.
Rangers saw manager Mark Warburton leave the club earlier this month, and the search is on for a new boss with the club lacking direction on and off the pitch.
Interim boss Graeme Murty has overseen successive 2-1 away defeats at Dundee and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, meaning many fans want a permanent manager to arrive sooner rather than later.
Before St Johnstone’s clash with Kilmarnock, manager Wright told BBC Sport that he – like any manager – would be interested in holding talks with Rangers if they approached him.
The Northern Irishman has impressed in charge of St Johnstone, possessing a 44% win rate in charge of the club whilst making the Saints a top half club on a limited budget.
His frugal work has seen him linked with the Rangers job, and he will get another chance to audition for the role when he takes his side to Glasgow on Wednesday – but he claims he won’t be distracted.

Wright has told The Scottish Sun that he is busy planning for next season with St Johnstone rather than focusing on Rangers rumours, and believes his players won’t use the speculation as an excuse either as they prepare for a trip to Ibrox.
“This has all been speculation and I have said before that it shows how good a job we must be doing if I am being linked with a club the size of Rangers,” said Wright. “But my focus and commitment is totally on St Johnstone. I signed Brian Easton on a new deal on Friday and I am meeting players for next season. I’m planning for St Johnstone and the future. I still have a lot of unfinished business here.”
“I’m trying to improve the squad and I am planning for next season. I am working closely with the chairman on that. The speculation doesn’t come into my thinking or that of my players. They’d never use that as an excuse for why we didn’t play well last weekend. We are all focused on the job we have to do,” he added.
