Newcastle United attacker Aleksandar Mitrovic states that he struggled mentally over the past few weeks due to lack of first-team opportunities.
Speaking to the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has explained that he went through a difficult time over the past few weeks as he was frustrated at the lack of first-team football coming his way.
Mitrovic has proved to be a popular figure among the Newcastle faithful due to his committed displays following a move to St. James’ Park last summer from Anderlecht but fans have been left worried regarding the striker’s fiery temperament.
The 21-year-old picked up a number of red cards last term and a direct sending off against Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the Premier League campaign saw him suspended for the first four matches of the current Championship season.
With Newcastle having signed Dwight Gayle for big money this summer, Mitrovic had to wait patiently before earning his place in the Magpies’ starting XI even after his suspension was served, and the Serbian international finally earned his first start of the current campaign during the 6-0 thumping of Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Tuesday night.
Mitrovic managed to mark his return with a goal and following the game the Serbian explained that the past few weeks were mentally very difficult as he was desperate to get back on to the pitch.
The young attacker was quoted saying by the Shields Gazette, “It has been a really frustrating few weeks for me, and it has been hard for me to keep my head right. But I always knew I would come through OK and the game against QPR proves that.
“It has been hard for me to stay strong in my head, but I knew I just had to wait for my chance and everything would be OK.”
