Remi Garde has explained that he was interested in a return to Arsenal a couple of years ago.
Speaking to L’Equipe, former Aston Villa manager Remi Garde has explained that he was eyeing the role of director of football at Arsenal back in 2007.
Garde played at Arsenal between 1996 and 1999, and although the Frenchman was not a regular he was considered a highly valued member of the squad.
Arsene Wenger was also a great admirer of Garde and it was actually the Arsenal boss who recommended the Gunners to sign the former defender back in 1996.
Since his playing days, the 50-year-old managed to forge a reputation as one of the finest coaches around and as a result he was consistently linked with a move back to Arsenal.
It was back in 2007 when Garde was rumored to be set for a return to Arsenal in a role as the club’s director of football.
The move evidently did not come to fruition but Garde has now gone on to reveal that the rumors were in fact true and added that it was a role that interested him at the time.
Speaking to French publication L’Equipe, Garde said, “It was a rumour that wasn’t completely unfounded… it’s true that the job (at Arsenal) interested me.”
Since missing out on the job at Arsenal, Garde has had managerial stints at Lyon and Aston Villa, and is now looking to get back into the game following an exit from Villa Park last season.
