Speaking to TyC Sports, Newcastle United defender Fabricio Coloccini has explained why he is set to depart St. James’ Park this summer.
Coloccini has been a crucial player for Newcastle since joining from Deportivo La Coruna in a £10million transfer back in 2008 but it is now clear to see that age has caught up with the defender.
The 34-year-old performed poorly last season and he was unable to prevent Newcastle from suffering the ignominy of relegation.
Following Newcastle’s drop down to the Championship, Coloccini had admitted a couple of days ago that he may well have to leave St. James’ Park this summer.
Now the Argentine has gone on to elaborate on why he has made the decision to end his eight year association with Newcastle in an interview with Argentine outlet TyC.
He explained that Newcastle are now looking to integrate younger players into the first-team and as a result he is keen on stepping aside.
The veteran defender said, “I think the chances are bigger now… because of the project they have at Newcastle and because of my age. When you get relegated, they point to a new plan with young people under 25 years old.
“So it’s a matter of talking and proposing them my exit. At the moment I have in mind going back to Argentine football. I want to go back to San Lorenzo, fulfil the dream of entering the pitch with my kids and retire there.”
Coloccini is a popular figure among the Newcastle faithful but his exit from the club this summer is likely to be beneficial for all parties involved.
