According to The Sun, Arsenal are interested in signing Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa, and while that is an exciting prospect for the Gunners, Spurs would have every right to be fuming if that deal went through.
Tottenham had the chance to sign Watkins last summer from Brentford. They even held talks with the striker, but due to the fact they made it clear he’d be second-choice behind Harry Kane, the England international opted to join Aston Villa instead.
“Tottenham were interested in me – they made it clear if Harry Kane was fit, then he would play,” Watkins said.
“I did have that in the back of my mind, but they said with the schedule and the Europa League, there were a lot of games coming up.
“I had big decisions to make, but in the end, I felt like I made the right one. The gaffer was a huge part in bringing me to Villa.”
Of course, no Spurs fan could have had any complaints about this decision last season. After all, Kane was the Golden Boot winner and the Playmaker Award winner in 2020/21.
However, one year later, the landscape at Tottenham looks rather different.
Kane has been pushing for a move away from the club and he’s out of form, failing to score a single Premier League goal so far this season.
Tottenham could certainly do with another quality striker in their squad, and it’s fair to say that Watkins could have filled that void. After all, the striker netted 14 Premier League goals last season and has been described as ‘outstanding’.
However, Spurs failed to convince Watkins, and now there’s a chance that he could end up playing for their biggest rivals after reports that Arsenal are interested.
If Kane doesn’t regain his form or if he leaves the club next summer, Spurs will surely be regretful about the fact they failed to sign Watkins, and that pain will hurt even more if he’s turning out for Arsenal in the near future.
