Tottenham Hotspur should be in the market for Junior Firpo.
Tottenham Hotspur didn’t bring in any new signings over the summer, and that leaves many expecting a whole host of additions in 2019.
Adding another left back should be a priority; Danny Rose is far from the player he was two years ago and has been going through a host of fitness and injury woes, whilst Ben Davies has failed to impress fans this season.
A replacement for Davies as first-choice left back should be on Mauricio Pochettino’s wish list, and a host of names have been mentioned, including Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and Celtic’s Kieran Tierney.
Another name that should be in the frame is that of Real Betis starlet Junior Firpo, with AS reporting that Arsenal are tracking his signature, even with his €50million (£43.5million) release clause in place.
Firpo, 22, has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last year. He only made his first-team debut for Real Betis in February of this year, but has quickly established himself as the first choice left back under Quique Setien, which tempted Betis into selling Riza Durmisi to Lazio of the summer.
Born in the Dominican Republic but now playing for Spain’s under-21’s, Firpo is set for a huge future, having impressed as an attacking left back for Setien, showing pace, energy and real quality in the final third.
He may not be a household name right now, but Firpo should become one of the top left backs around in the next five years if his current progress is anything to go by, and has all the attributes that made Rose such a star for Pochettino in the 2015-16 season.
If Spurs sit back and watch Arsenal sign Firpo, they would be left kicking themselves in years to come, and they must enter the race for his signature – especially as Pochettino was spotted scouting Real Betis earlier this season.
