The Tottenham Hotspur star had a spell at Atletico Madrid.
In an interview with Marca, Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has opened the door to a return to Spanish football.
Alderweireld, who claimed Spurs fought off interest from “many clubs” to sign him from Atletico Madrid in 2015, spent two years at the Vicente Calderon.
And despite being loaned out to Southampton during the latter of those, the Belgian has retained fond memories of his time in La Liga.
When asked if he could one day return to Spain, Alderweireld told Marca: “You never know. I enjoyed my time at Atletico. I became a better player but the Premier League is fantastic and I’m happy here.”
Alderweireld is yet to miss a minute of league action since arriving at White Hart Lane, where he was voted as player of the year by supporters last term.
And the 27-year-old has already doubled his Atletico appearance tally, having found Diego Godin and Joao Miranda difficult to oust.
As such, Alderweireld spent much of his time in Spain’s capital filling in at right-back, but has looked far more at home in a central role since switching to English football.
The former Ajax star has forged an almost watertight partnership with Jan Vertonghen – his old Amsterdam ArenA colleague – in north London.
