Tottenham Hotspur appear to have missed on Ben White as he has agreed a new deal with Brighton and Hove Albion.
White is currently on loan at Newport County and played both games as Spurs needed a replay to get past the League Two side in the FA Cup – the round after the Exiles pulled off an upset by knocking Championship side Leeds out of the competition.
It seems highly likely that those two games played a part in attracting Spurs’ attention, and it appeared that it may be a situation to keep an eye on as The Sun reported towards the end of the month that he turned down a new deal with his parent club.
However, any hope Mauricio Pochettino may have perhaps had about signing White appears to have been dashed for the time-being, with Brighton confirming on their official website that he has signed a new contract that will run until 2021.
And after signing the deal, White spoke about his experience of coming up against Tottenham and against Kane in the FA Cup earlier this season.
“His movement was very clever and he always made sure he got himself in-between me and the ball all the time as well, and he was very sharp.
“As soon as the draw was made I got a lot of messages from everyone – but it was a challenge I took in my stride because of the way I’d proved myself before during the campaign – I’m confident against everyone I come up against.”
Of course, White signing a new contract may not end Spurs’ hopes of signing the 20-year-old at some stage down the line, but it certainly makes getting something done that little bit more difficult.
But given that White did impress when Tottenham faced Newport this term, perhaps that additional effort to sign him may be worth it if Pochettino still has any interest in buying the young defender.
