England Under-20 coach Andy Edwards has told the Hampstead & Highgate Express that he was impressed with Tottenham duo Kyle Walker-Peters and Joshua Onomah during England’s World Cup success.
England’s young stars headed out to South Korea for the Under-20 World Cup in May, and ended up coming home with the trophy after a superb tournament.
Wins over Argentina and South Korea either side of a draw with Guinea sent England into the knockout stages of the competition, and they went on to beat Costa Rica, Mexico and Italy to reach the final.

One club to heavily promote the use of young English players is Tottenham Hotspur, and they sent two players to the Under-20 World Cup in midfielder Joshua Onomah and full back Kyle Walker-Peters.
Onomah enjoyed a mostly impressive campaign in a deeper midfield role than he is used to with Spurs, though he did receive a quite bizarre red card in the win over Mexico, the one blot on his copy book.

Meanwhile, full back Walker-Peters was also used in an unfamiliar role, playing at left back as opposed to his usual right back spot – but he particularly impressed against South Korea with a strong attacking performance.
Now, Andy Edwards – who works as the out-of-possession coach for England Under-20’s – has told the Hampstead & Highgate Express that he felt Onomah was ‘outstanding’ throughout the competition, giving Spurs fans hope that he can fulfil his potential moving forward.
Edwards also heaped praise on defender Walker-Peters, claiming he was ‘exceptional’ against South Korea whilst hailing his attacking play and tipping him for a big future with Tottenham.

“Josh was outstanding throughout the whole tournament and everyone would agree his red card in the Mexico game was absolutely ridiculous,” said Edwards. “It was never a sending-off, but he came back into the team for the final and I thought he was one of our stand-out players against Venezuela.”
“Kyle wasn’t in the side for the first two games, but made his first appearance against South Korea at left-back. We had an injury to Rico Henry of Brentford, who had to fly home unfortunately, so Kyle came in and he was exceptional in the third group game and never looked back.”
“I thought he was great going forward, had good pace and quick feet, but was also very strong defensively. When he was defending one-on-one situations and from a positional sense, he was spot-on. If you win a World Cup you need players performing at a high level and one to 21 we did, but I thought Kyle was very exciting to watch and as an attacking full-back, he has a very good future,” he added.
