Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku is set to return to the first team this week when the Blues face Tottenham in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final.

According to the Telegraph, the 28-year-old striker is ‘expected’ to return to Thomas Tuchel’s side on Wednesday night after productive talks with the German manager.

Lukaku gave an explosive interview to Sky Sports Italia that was released last week which looked to throw his Chelsea career into disarray. The striker revealed that he was not happy with the club and that he wanted to return to Inter Milan.

Indeed, Lukaku was dropped from Chelsea’ 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday. However, it appears that the Belgian international will now return to the squad to face Spurs at Stamford Bridge.

It is a huge boost for Chelsea and a big blow for Spurs, with Lukaku no doubt looking to make a point on the night if the former Manchester United star makes the XI on Wednesday.

Lukaku’s record against Tottenham, though, is poor, with the Chelsea striker scoring just one goal against the north London side. However, Antonio Conte’s men will have to be prepared for Blues talisman.

Lukaku return for Chelsea is the worst-case scenario for Spurs

It has been a roller-coaster few days for Lukaku, who was inches away from tarnishing his Chelsea reputation just four months after joining the club for a record fee. Yet a big performance against Spurs will be the perfect way for the attacker to win fans back onto his side.

The League Cup is a competition Spurs simply have to win. Yet with Lukaku back for Chelsea, the Belgian international will no doubt have a point to prove to both the Blues and the supporters of the west London side, and that spells trouble for Tottenham.
