Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has suggested that he is disappointed not to have scored more.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has admitted to the club’s official site that he has been frustrated with his lack of goals of late.
Not too many defenders would be concerned with their scoring records, but Vertonghen had got used to hitting the back of the net and he was starting to feel the pressure having not scored since 2013.
However, after getting on the scoresheet in Spurs’s 2-1 win over Sunderland this weekend, Vertonghen has finally broken has duck and he was clearly relieved.
“I scored in the World Cup but that doesn’t count for Tottenham!” he said after the match. “It’s a shame, I always used to score so many goals. I thought before the game that I couldn’t go the rest of the season without scoring a few goals!”
Vertonghen could have doubled his tally for the season too, if his late strike had not been incorrectly ruled out for offside, but he will still reflect on a job well done.
Even though his goal may be the most notable moment of his performance, it has been his defending which has impressed the most recently.
The Belgian international has really stepped up and he appears to be in the finest form he has shown for a considerable amount of time.
It has been a major reason behind Spurs’s upturn in results and Vertonghen will be hoping to continue reaching his top level as the side aim for a Champions League spot in the second half of the campaign.
