Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose doesn’t feel he is near the England squad, with West Ham United’s Aaron Cresswell among those he has named ahead of him.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose believes that West Ham United’s Aaron Cresswell is ahead of him in the England pecking order.
Cresswell has only been playing Premier League football since the start of the season, but his performances have clearly caught the eye of Rose.
“I don’t see myself anywhere near the international squads,” Rose told the London Evening Standard on Wednesday. “It’s just how it is. Leighton Baines is quite rightly the first choice, then Ryan Bertrand is doing very well at Southampton. Kieran Gibbs and Luke Shaw are ahead of me, too, and I’m a big fan of Aaron Cresswell at West Ham.”
Cresswell has been one of the Hammers top performers this term and looks to be one of the Premier League’s most astute signings of 2014.
Rose, meanwhile, has suffered heavy criticism from Spurs supporters who feel that he is some way off the quality required to represent them.
It would suggest that Cresswell, therefore, has had a far better season than Rose, but the stats indicate that the two full-backs are comparable.
| Team | Headers won per game | Interceptions per game | Defensive duels per game | Tackles per game | Crosses per game | Chances created per game | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aaron Cresswell | West Ham | 1.46 | 0.96 | 4.19 | 1.42 | 3.3 | 0.96 | 26 | 2340 |
| Danny Rose | Tottenham | 1.05 | 2.3 | 6 | 2.55 | 3.25 | 0.9 | 20 | 1672 |
Cresswell is better in the air than Rose, but in every other defensive aspect the Tottenham man looks the superior option.
West Ham’s left-back is slightly better going forward, but it isn’t particularly noticeable and it means that Rose’s self-assessment may be slightly harsh.
He seems, at the very worst, on a par with Cresswell and to get the best out of himself he may need to start believing in his own ability.
