Tottenham Hotspur could move for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney but he seems more likely to leave in summer than in January.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Tottenham have been showing a strong interest in Boro midfielder Hayden Hackney.

Tottenham are expected to be in the market for another midfielder come January.

Rodrigo Bentancur sadly has another injury problem whilst both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr will be heading to the Africa Cup of Nations.

That will leave Tottenham short of midfield options and targets are being identified for Ange Postecoglou’s engine room.

Tottenham Hotspur want Hayden Hackney

Reports from the Daily Mail now suggest that Tottenham are showing a strong interest in Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney.

It’s claimed that both Liverpool and Spurs are keen to sign Hackney but Tottenham are ‘among those most interested’ in the Boro talent.

However, Hackney is expected to stay at Middlesbrough until the end of the season rather than move on in January.

Nottingham Forest may still try their luck in January but they may not be able to tempt Hackney away from the Riverside Stadium.

The report indicates that Manchester City and Manchester United are also keen on Hackney, but it’s Liverpool who are expected to offer the strongest competition to Tottenham in this transfer race.

Who is Tottenham target Hackney?

Hackney was born in Redcar, just outside of Middlesbrough, so it’s no surprise that he joined the Boro ranks as a kid at Under-10 level.

The midfielder made it all the way up through the Middlesbrough ranks and made his first-team debut in January 2021, featuring against Brentford in the FA Cup.

Hackney then spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Scunthorpe United, playing 31 times in League Two.

Hackney’s big breakthrough came last season as he emerged into a key role under former Tottenham ace Michael Carrick.

Now an England Under-21 international who can also play for Scotland, Hackney is showing big potential at just 21.

Praised as ‘terrific’ by Carrick, Hackney will surely play Premier League football down the line and it could come in 2024 with Liverpool and Tottenham keen.
