Tottenham Hotspur fans may have been left a little concerned by the latest comments from Christian Eriksen about a proposed move to Barcelona.

The attacking midfielder has been linked with the Catalan giants after another impressive season for Spurs and Eriksen has admitted that playing for Barca would be tempting.

“Barcelona are a great club and I don’t think there are many who say no to Barcelona,” the 25-year-old was quoted by the Independent.

“In the future I see myself at the highest level. That’s what I dream about. It can be in about two to three years. It may be at another club or it could be Tottenham if we have come all the way up.”

If Eriksen were to leave Tottenham then the North Londoners would have a massive gap to fill, with the Denmark international providing 15 Premier League assists in 2016/17 (second only to Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne) and also scoring eight goals.

Yet there is a player who can rival those statistics and he is someone who is familiar to Spurs having played for the club for two years previously – Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Sigurdsson scored nine league goals and provided 13 assists for Swansea City last term, with the London Evening Standard one of the latest publications to link the 27-year-old with a return to Tottenham.

There will be obvious concerns about the Iceland international coming back to North London because he failed to assert himself when he first joined in 2012, but the problem then was the midfielder was a bit-part player and was often asked to play out of position.

Yet if Eriksen left for the Camp Nou, Sigurdsson could operate in his favoured role behind the striker and since he left for Swansea in 2014 he has matured and developed to now be truly ready for success at a top six club.
