According to a recent report from the Daily Mirror, Tottenham are interested in signing Southampton full-back Cedric Soares during the summer as Mauricio Pochettino reconsiders his options in that area of the field less than a year after Spurs spent £23 million on Serge Aurier.

The Mirror suggests that Cedric is likely to leave St Mary’s if the Saints are unable to drag themselves out of the bottom three during the final games of the Premier League season, and Spurs are lurking in case he does become available in the coming weeks.

Cedric has not been at his best this term, but he is a very talented right-back and it would be little surprise if there was plenty of interest in the Euro 2016 winner – who currently earns £65,000-a-week at the south coast club, according to Spotrac.

Spurs therefore, may face competition, but perhaps they could have an ace up their sleeve that could make a potential deal a real masterstroke from Pochettino’s men, and it centres around a report from during the January window.

The Sun reported at the start of the year that the Saints were keen on a loan deal for Kyle Walker-Peters, who has played a peripheral role this year despite being the man of the match in Spurs’ opening game of the season.

With Kieran Trippier, Aurier and potentially Cedric ahead of the youngster in the pecking order, his chances of much game-time next term look incredibly slim, even if one of the pair already at the club move on in the coming months.

Offering him to Southampton on a season-long loan deal as part of the deal that sees Cedric move the other way could be a fantastic move for all parties.

Spurs would land their target and give one of their brightest prospects the chance to play week-in, week-out for a season – whether that be in the Premier League or Championship – where he can perfect his game at a club that has an excellent record for helping youngsters realise their potential.

If the Saints are going to lose Cedric, getting Walker-Peters for a season would surely be a fantastic consolation – and one that must appeal given their January interest.

In the long run, Tottenham could land a summer target’s signature and give Walker-Peters the platform to prove that he has the ability and potential to become Pochettino’s first choice in the coming years.
