Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with leaving the club at the end of the season.
It was reported by the Daily Mail in November that Spurs were fearful that they would face a fight to keep hold of Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the season.
Pochettino has been linked with a potential departure for much of his tenure after doing an outstanding job with Tottenham. He has been linked with Real Madrid, and the Mail reported last year that Spurs were concerned that Los Blancos may come calling when this season concludes despite appointing Santiago Solari.
Solari now appears to be on the brink. Marca reported this week that Madrid were considering his position following their stunning Champions League exit at the hands of Ajax.
But while Solari’s possible departure may see the speculation over Pochettino’s future start up again, surely there should be significantly less concern amongst the movers and shakers at Spurs regarding the possibility of the Argentine leaving.
Daniel Levy cannot take Pochettino’s position for granted. But, while Spurs continue to make progress, Madrid appear to be in danger of heading further in the opposite direction.
If it was not already clear, the squad needs to be rebuilt. And the fact is that they are reluctant to give their managers the time to take one or two steps back in the hope of making four or five forward.
Just four of the 16 coaches Madrid have had since the turn of the Millennium have gone on to manage more than 100 games, while staggeringly, six have not lasted 30 games in the Bernabeu dug-out.
Tottenham may not be able to make the same ambitious promises that Madrid can. But joining the latter is becoming a less and less attractive opportunity by the day right now.
And given the rate at which Madrid go through coaches, there is no reason to think that Pochettino will not receive numerous offers before his managerial career ends. At some stage, it may be the right time to go.
But if this week has shown one thing, it is surely that Pochettino should be emphatic in his response if Madrid try to tempt him away from Spurs anytime soon.
After all, only one has a Champions League quarter-final to concentrate on.
