Toby Alderweireld looks set to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to the Daily Mail, with the latest contract talks between the player and club having collapsed.
Paris Saint-Germain have now moved ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Alderweireld as the French giants are prepared to meet the defender’s £200,000-a-week wage demands.
This is something Spurs will not do and they are also not willing to give a centre-back who will turn 30 next March a five-year deal – another of the Belgian’s stipulations.
The right call
While it is a big decision to willingly part ways with someone many believe to be the best in his position in the top flight of English football, Tottenham have made the correct one.
Breaking their wage structure so spectacularly for a Belgium international whose form could start to decline as he enters his 30s would be reckless in the extreme.
Also, manager Mauricio Pochettino can fall back on the fact that Davinson Sanchez has settled into life in North London much quicker than perhaps anyone expected following a switch from Ajax and is a readymade replacement for Alderweireld who is also eight years younger.
