Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to spend on River Plate playmaker Juan Fernando Quintero.

According to La Nueva in Argentina, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to spend a significant fee on Porto playmaker Juan Fernando Quintero after an impressive World Cup.

Spurs are yet to make a new signing this summer, but boss Mauricio Pochettino may be looking at potential signings over in Russia during the World Cup.

Whilst many expected Colombia’s Wilmar Barrios to be a top target for Spurs, his teammate Juan Fernando Quintero appears to be emerging as a main player Tottenham are looking to sign.

Reports earlier this week suggested Spurs were keen, and now La Nueva in Argentina report that Tottenham – as well as Real Madrid – are willing to spend significant money on signing Quintero.

The 25-year-old has impressed for Colombia with a goal and two assists in three appearances, helping Jose Pekerman’s side to advance into the last 16 of the competition.

Quintero’s patchy record at club level means Spurs should be wary. The midfielder was highly rated with Pescara, earning a 2013 move to Porto, but he has failed to settle with the Portuguese side, resulting in loan moves to Rennes, Independiente Medellin and River Plate.

Tottenham would be wise to wait until Tuesday to make a decision on Quintero, as he will be facing his toughest test of the World Cup when he lines up to face England – and with James Rodriguez potentially out injured, the creative onus will fall on Quintero.

If the playmaker can impress against some of Pochettino’s Tottenham players such as Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier and Dele Alli, then Spurs may well be convinced that Quintero’s World Cup isn’t a flash in the pan, but a poor display could leave questions over his suitability to play at the highest level, making Tuesday’s clash between Colombia and England potentially key to Tottenham’s pursuit.
