If rumours are believed, Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Leonardo Bonucci.
But a deal to sign the veteran Italian would’ve been a lot easier had Spurs hired Antonio Conte.
Tottenham were close to appointing Conte as Jose Mourinho’s successor but The Guardian reported on Friday that talks collapsed.
According to TmW, the North Londoners are keen on signing the Juventus centre-back nevertheless, with Tottenham still expected hire Fabio Paratici as sporting director.
Bonucci has played under Conte for the Italian giants and his national team.
And it’s safe to say the big 34-year-old defender is a massive fan of the 51-year-old, who has made this clear on a number of occasions.
In 2017, Bonucci said to Ibianconcero: “I have been coached by some great coaches. Each one of them has given me something but the best one and the manager that has given me the most is Conte.”
Bonucci, who is contracted to the Turin-based club until 2024 and earns £98,000 per week, said a year earlier: “The players in the Italy team nicknamed him The Godfather. That means when he talks, you listen. You do what he says and you don’t argue. Players want to listen though.”
Labelling him ‘The Godfather’ indicates a massive amount of respect and it’s obvious that Tottenham’s pursuit of the player would be a lot easier had they been successful in getting Conte.
