Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing a move for James Ward-Prowse.

The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that Spurs have joined Aston Villa in the race to sign the Southampton midfielder.

Tottenham have been missing a dead-ball specialist since Christian Eriksen left the club over 18 months ago.

But this would be a fitting replacement in that regard – and past comments from Pep Guardiola ought to illustrate his effectiveness from dead balls.

In fact, the Manchester City manager claimed in December of 2020 that he had never seen a better free-kick specialist in his entire life, saying to BBC: “They have the best free-kick taker I have seen in my life in Ward-Prowse. Their position in the table, Ralph [Hasenhuttl] is doing an excellent job.”

Could it happen?

Well if Tottenham genuinely want him, it could certainly happen.

The 26-year-old has been linked with big clubs in the past but it’s never quite materialised.

In terms of consistency, though, you could argue that Ward-Prowse deserves a bigger move than Southampton.

The 8-time England international, who scored four direct free kicks last season, earns £35,000 per week at St Mary’s and surely a major bump in pay could convince him to move to North London.

It’ll be a busy few weeks for every Premier League club and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the Lilywhites did make their interest known to the Saints.
