Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal could reportedly battle over centre-back Matthias Ginter.
According to a report from Sky Sports, Spurs could make a move for Matthias Ginter in the summer as they prepare for the potential departure of Toby Alderweireld – but Mauricio Pochettino’s side will face competition from Arsenal for his signature.
Sky Sports reports that the £25 million release clause in Toby Alderweireld’s contract has been activated ahead of the summer window, and Jan Vertonghen’s contract is currently set to run until 2020.
Ginter is one of the defenders that Pochettino is monitoring, according to Sky Sports, having been a Spurs target before making the move from Borussia Dortmund to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017.
However, Arsenal are also reportedly interested in landing the 25-year-old, who was included in Germany’s World Cup winning squad in 2014. Unai Emery’s side have conceded more goals than any other side in the top eight in the Premier League.
Ginter could be an exciting addition for Tottenham. He is confident on the ball, and his composure and passing ability leaves the option open for the defender to be pushed into more of a holding midfield role. Ginter has also been used as a right-back at times, so he provides plenty of versatility.
And if Spurs end up losing Alderweireld in the summer, Ginter may perhaps be a very good replacement for the Belgian – if Pochettino manages to see off a potential challenge from their North London rivals.
