Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier will have to take a pay cut in order to make an emotional return to Sporting in 2024.
Sporting are interested in re-signing Eric Dier but finances could be a big problem in their pursuit of the Tottenham Hotspur defender.
That is according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, who report that Sporting want Dier but are prepared to wait until June.
Dier is out of contract at the end of the season and his time at Tottenham looks likely to come to an end.
The 29-year-old has come in from the cold to feature in Tottenham’s last two matches, covering for the suspended Cristian Romero.
Sporting want Eric Dier back
Ange Postecoglou needs Dier right now but we can’t see him staying at Tottenham beyond the end of the season.
Dier will have been at Tottenham for 10 years come the end of the campaign and the time has come for a change.
Portuguese newspaper O Jogo now claim that Sporting would love to re-sign Dier in 2024.
Sporting sold Dier to Tottenham in 2014 but boss Ruben Amorim is now supporting the idea of bringing Dier back to Lisbon.
However, there is one big problem – Dier’s wages don’t really fit into Sporting’s budget.
It’s stated that Sporting can only afford to pay €2million-a-year to a new signing whereas Dier earns around €5million-a-year (around £85,000-a-week).
Sporting would need Dier to take an enormous pay cut in order to rejoin the club, seriously testing the emotional pull back to Lisbon.

Dier has plenty to think about amid Jose Mourinho interest
Maybe heading back to his former club will really appeal to Dier, even if he earns less money there.
There are other options for Dier though, including Jose Mourinho and Roma.
Tuttomercatoweb reported earlier this month that Mourinho has initiated contact to sign Dier in January.
The problem with that move is that Mourinho may be on his way out of Roma at the end of the season.
Would Dier risk signing for a manager who could be gone in a few months? It’s a big gamble at this stage in his career.
Dier would also need to think about whether Amorim could move on from Sporting in the near future given his standing as a top young manager.
Dier is bound to attract plenty of interest in 2024, but predicting his next move is tricky given the issues with the potential suitors.
