Tottenham saw Harry Kane suffer another ankle injury on Sunday.
Everton’s Romelu Lukaku celebrates scoring
Pundit Stan Collymore has told Boyle Sports that Tottenham need to break the bank in order to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku this summer.
Spurs star Harry Kane has continued his goalscoring feats this season with 24 goals in all competitions, despite having missed seven weeks of the season with an ankle injury suffered back in September.
However, Kane suffered what looked to be the exact same injury against Millwall on Sunday, and was immediately substituted amid fears that he could miss another seven weeks of action at such a crucial stage of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino is now left to choose either Son Heung-min or Vincent Janssen as Kane’s replacement, with neither player a particularly appealing option right now for many Spurs fans.
Many expect Spurs to be in the market for another centre forward this summer, and whilst some names – such as Kevin Gameiro and Alexandre Lacazette have been suggested – one pundit suggests that the club should go even bigger.
Romelu Lukaku has become one of the Premier League’s top strikers during his time at Everton, and he’s currently tied with Spurs hero Kane at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with 19 league goals this season.
The Belgian has been expected to sign a new contract, but with that situation dragging on, pundit Stan Collymore has told Boyle Sports that Tottenham must break the bank to lure Lukaku to White Hart Lane this summer.
Collymore claims that Tottenham need to sign a striker who is arguably better than Kane, and with being able to offer a move to London, he believes Spurs must roll out the red carpet and swoop to sign Lukaku in a big-money deal, partnering him and Kane in the Premier League’s most potent strikeforce.
Stan Collymore
“All great players have competition and I know that in 2017, players are more prissy, more demanding and off quicker when someone takes their place – but Kane is going nowhere for the next couple of seasons at least and maybe longer if the trophies start to come in, so go and break the bank and get someone who is arguably BETTER than Kane, or at least on the same level, and you know who that would be for me? Romelu Lukaku,” said Collymore.
“Imagine either of these fine young strikers in two years time, approaching their best days playing together, or individually, and all of a sudden you just don’t have the problem that Spurs currently face, namely, no Kane, no chance beyond a month or so. Chelsea, City, United and Arsenal all arguably would be interested if Rom became available, plus many clubs from abroad would be interested but I can’t stress enough that modern players want to live in London, he’s been in the capital once with Chelsea and the way Spurs play, the creativity behind a solo striker or pairing (flexibility that Spurs need over several tournaments) would fit him hand in glove.”
“Don’t get me wrong Evertonians, I’m not trying to sell your player, but look down the line two years, unless the Toffees win trophies which, with the competition above them looks unlikely, Everton could command big money for Lukaku and if we are all being honest, like Kane at Spurs, unless either win trophies in the next two years with their current clubs, both will be off!! The old fashioned strike partnership is out of fashion currently, but I’m licking my lips at the thought of these two fine young strikers playing together,” he added.
Collymore may believe such a move is the right move for Spurs, but club chairman Daniel Levy would almost certainly disagree. The Tottenham chief has run a tight ship at White Hart Lane in the face of increasing spending in the top flight, and has focused more on bringing in young players and keeping existing stars than splashing money on big-name signings.
Lukaku would almost certainly command upwards of £60million in the transfer market, and whilst he’s a top player, it seems unlikely that Levy would sanction such a deal – especially with Spurs set to move into a new stadium, that will have an impact on the transfer funds at Pochettino’s disposal.
A dream signing he is, but a realistic one given Tottenham’s current plans and strategy? Don’t expect to see Lukaku donning a Spurs shirt in the near future.
