Spurs must hope Wanyama’s bond with Pochettino is as much of an obstacle as Levy

Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with Tottenham Hotspur’s Victor Wanyama.

Tottenham Hotspur are in the midst of celebrating Wednesday night’s 6-1 thrashing of Rochdale in the FA Cup, but speculation is surrounding one of their key players.

With a top four race on, an FA Cup campaign ticking over and a Champions League clash against Juventus on the horizon, it’s all go on the pitch for Spurs, and they won’t want any rumours to affect their players – as they did with Kyle Walker around this time last year.

However, the Daily Mail report that both Liverpool and Manchester United are both keen on signing Spurs midfielder Victor Wanyama, and believe he could be tempted into making a summer move.

It’s noted that a price for Wanyama could reach £40million, but both teams are a little deterred from making a bid by the fact that they would have to negotiate with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Levy can often be an obstacle to deals given his negotiating style, but Spurs may also be hoping that Wanyama’s strong relationship with manager Mauricio Pochettino can be just as much of an obstacle to any potential departure.

Wanyama first joined forces with Pochettino back in the summer of 2013, signing for Southampton from Celtic, and he became a Premier League regular in his one season under the Argentinian before reuniting in 2016.

The Kenyan star has again been vital under Pochettino, serving a key role in front of the Tottenham defence whilst allowing the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane to go forward and attack.

Pochettino and Wanyama know each other inside out and clearly trust each other, meaning that Spurs may well hope that their strong relationship can keep the midfielder in North London, and out of the clutches of Liverpool and Manchester United.
