Tottenham sacked Jose Mourinho almost two months ago, and yet, still to this day, the dark cloud of the Mourinho era still hangs over the club.
Indeed, a number of the issues at Spurs that started under Mourinho were still present during Ryan Mason’s time as interim manager, and this is still very much Mourinho’s squad, built to play the Mourinho way.
However, Tottenham could be about to make a transfer move that would signify a complete move away from that era.
According to Sky Sports, Spurs have re-ignited their interest in Max Aarons, and what is interesting about this move is that they’ve looked at him before.
The Athletic once reported that Spurs were keen on Aarons, but Mourinho was against the move because he believed he was too small.
We all know that Mourinho likes to play a physical game where size rules over substance, especially in the defence, but it seems as though Tottenham are moving away from that ethos by targeting Aarons.

Bringing Aarons in as their first post-Mourinho signing would be a huge statement of intent from Levy. It would show a commitment to moving forward and bringing Spurs’ playing philosophy out of the dark ages where size is more important than technical ability.
Aarons’ arrival would be a sign that Spurs have finally been freed from Mourinho’s shackles, and yes, while Aarons may not be a big strong full-back, he’s a technically brilliant footballer who goes forward with energy, and that’s what Tottenham Hotspur should be about, not the conservative, defensive style that we’ve seen for the past 18 months.
Officially, the Mourinho era ended on April 19, but the arrival of Aarons may be the true sign that the ghosts of the former Chelsea boss’ reign of terror have been put to rest.
