Spurs have entered talks with the agent of former Fiorentina manager Gennaro Gattuso after their long-running pursuit of Paulo Fonseca hit the buffers, as reported by Tuttomercatoweb.

Just when you thought there was light at the end of a tunnel, it seems Daniel Levy is hurtling all the way back to square one.

Tottenham Hotspur have been in advanced negotiations with 49-year-old Fonseca for more than a week. But, as the days rolled by, official confirmation remained elusive – and it seems we now know why.

According to Italian football expert Fabrizio Romano, Fonseca had verbally agreed a deal with the Premier League giants.

But “huge fiscal problems” have now ruined those best-laid plans, with Tottenham facing up to the prospect of a humiliating return to the drawing board.

Is Gattuso now set to become Spurs manager?

Fortunately, another name on Daniel Levy’s lengthy wish-list has just become available.

Every cloud and all that.

Gennaro Gattuso channelled his inner-Marcelo Bielsa this afternoon, walking away from Fiorentina just 23 days after taking over at the perennial underachievers of Italian football.

And, according to TMW, the 2006 World Cup winner has suddenly found himself in pole position for another job instead.

Tottenham are understood to have initiated contacts with Gattuso’s agent, Jorge Mendes, with a two-year contract being discussed.

Interestingly, Mendes also represents Fonseca, not to mention a certain Jose Mourinho.
