Tottenham Hotspur could be about to start a managerial domino effect.
The Antonio Conte project at Spurs is, slowly but surely, failing, and according to Italian outlet CMW, the Tottenham manager has decided to leave north London this summer.
Luckily though, Spurs have prepared for this eventuality and they already have their replacement in mind – a certain Diego Simeone.
Of course, if Simeone is to join Tottenham, that will lead to another high-profile managerial vacancy over at Atletico Madrid where Simeone has served for over a decade.
If Atletico are looking for a new manager, they’ll surely be fishing in the biggest of ponds. After all, Simeone is the highest-paid gaffer in world football, and there’s one candidate that stands out above the rest.
Of course, we’re talking about Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino would be an unbelievably good fit for this job. Much like Simeone, he’s an Argentine manager who has been heavily influenced by the teachings of Marcelo Bielsa and he’s even been compared to Simeone at one point in his career.
Of course, Poch is more exciting than the very defensive-minded Simeone, but that should really suit a team that contains attacking talents such as Joao Felix, Antoine Griezmann and Angel Correa.
Pochettino also knows La Liga like the back of his hand having spent many years with Espanyol as both a player and a manager, so a return to Spain could be appealing for the former Spurs boss.
Having been out of work for quite some time, Pochettino probably isn’t a contender for one of Europe’s truly elite jobs right now – Real Madrid, PSG or Bayern Munich probably won’t come calling anytime soon, but Atletico lie in that sweet spot in between where they’re incredibly ambitious but they’re not a so-called ‘giant’.
Pochettino to Atletico would make the world of sense, but that may only happen if these rumours of Simeone heading to Spurs in the summer are accurate.
Tottenham may be about to help their former manager get a new job by taking Simeone away from Madrid.
