Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with Feyenoord manager Arne Slot in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, the Independent reported that Spurs were trying to assess whether he was keen on the job.
More recently, Voetbal International suggested that Slot has a ‘good chance’ of getting the Tottenham gig.
Now, the 44-year-old has told ESPN that the Premier League is “of course” the best domestic competition in Europe.
Slot also spoke of his decision to reject Leeds United earlier this year, saying the timing wasn’t right for him.
“I think Leeds is a very nice club,” he told ESPN’s Kenneth Perez, as transcribed by Sport Witness.
“The moment in the middle of the season, where you still have so much to play for at Feyenoord, I didn’t think that was a good time to leave for England.
“Then there is also a huge challenge at Feyenoord. It was also much better from a family point of view to stay here for a while.
“The Premier League is of course the number one competition in Europe. Although I also follow developments in Italy with great interest.
“I also think it is very valuable to leave somewhere in a positive way.
“Giovanni van Bronckhorst, for example, became champion here, but a year later his life no longer looked so nice.”
Our view
Slot’s interview with ESPN will no doubt be welcomed by Spurs fans.
He showed respect towards Leeds, spoke highly of the Premier League, and kept the door open on an end-of-season move to England.
Slot has always looked like he’d be a great appointment for Spurs.
He is a very talented young manager who has achieved “incredible” things at Feyenoord.
Now, Slot looks ready for a step up in his career.
His credentials and style of play would certainly tick a lot of boxes for Tottenham.
Alasdair Gold recently described the coach’s philosophy as a “Pochettino in the making”.
We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks and months, but the prospect of Slot joining Spurs is an exciting one.
