According to a report from The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are keen on Newport County loanee Ben White after he featured against the club in the FA Cup earlier this year.

White, 20, is currently on the books of Brighton and Hove Albion having come up through the ranks with the Seagulls, but was sent out on loan to Newport back in August 2017 for the duration of this season for first-team experience.

The defender has ben a regular this season, making 40 appearances in all competitions whilst seemingly catching the eye of bigger clubs with his displays against Leeds and Tottenham in the FA Cup.

It’s claimed that White has rejected a new deal with Brighton and could move on, with Liverpool and Tottenham thought to be interested in pouncing for the promising young centre back this summer.

White was supposed to miss Newport’s trip to face Tottenham in their FA Cup replay, but somehow came through a fitness test to play at Wembley despite nursing a thigh strain, and his manager had huge words of praise before the game, when he thought White was missing out.

Newport boss Michael Flynn told the South Wales Argus 24 hours before the game that whilst he was gutted that White would be missing out, he had every belief that the defender will end up playing at Wembley for England in the future, telling him not to panic.

“It’s unfortunate,” said Flynn. “Ben would have played and I’m absolutely gutted for the boy because he really is a special kid. It would have been his chance to test himself on the biggest stage so I’m devastated for him. With the loyalty he’s shown and with his performances this season he deserved to step out at Wembley and make himself and his family proud.”

“But I’m sure if he keeps improving and doing the right things he’ll play there for England so I don’t think he needs to panic too much,” he added.

That’s huge praise for White, and whilst he has some way to go, a move to Tottenham – working under a manager who has developed a host of young English players – could be a huge step towards fulfilling Flynn’s suggestion about international honours for the young defender.
