Tottenham Hotspur have recently been linked with West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans, but a move now seems unlikely.
With The Telegraph reporting that Jonny Evans is set to be available for just £3 million if West Brom are relegated this season, it would not be a surprise if every single club in the Premier League considered making a move with the Baggies almost definitely going down. Tottenham are one side who are definitely keen, according to the same report.
Evans may have endured a miserable year with West Brom, but he is still a very good defender. And for £3 million, it would surely be difficult for any team in the top flight to argue that he would not be a smart signing in an era that sees some fringe players move for 10 times that amount.
Spurs’ need to sign Evans may increase over the coming months, with The Telegraph suggesting that there is serious doubt over Toby Alderweireld’s future with the club. But perhaps the latest report on Evans’ situation hints that Mauricio Pochettino is facing a huge uphill battle trying to win the race for his signature.
It is unlikely that Evans’ apparent desire to join City will disappoint many Spurs fans too considerably. As shrewd a signing as he would have been, he has endured a terrible season at The Hawthorns – he is one of a number of players to have under-performed significantly this term – and the queue to sign him would surely be nowhere near as long had his relegation release clause not existed.
Nevertheless, pulling off a deal would have been an excellent way for Pochettino to bolster his ranks without taking anything like a significant chunk out of his transfer budget. But it appears that he may need to look elsewhere with Evans’ eyes on the Etihad.
