Former Premier League club owner Simon Jordan can’t understand why Southampton striker Danny Ings would accept a move to Spurs this summer, speaking to talkSPORT (14 July, 12.50pm).
Yes, Tottenham Hotspur will be playing European football in 2021/22 – but not the sort of European football Danny Ings wants.
A burning desire to prove himself on the biggest stage appears to be the motivating factor behind the striker’s decision to turn down a new contract at Southampton.
It seems unlikely, however, that midweek trips to Bala Town, Vorskla Poltava or Shakhter Karagandy is what Ings had in mind.
A seventh-place finish last season means a Spurs side that came within 90 minutes of European glory just two years ago will be plying its trade in the UEFA Conference League next term.
Furthermore, with chairman Daniel Levy struggling to invest heavily in playing staff after the pandemic put a strain on the club’s already stretched resources, it’s hard to imagine Tottenham paying the sort of fee Southampton want for their England number nine either.
Will Spurs miss out on Southampton star Danny Ings?
“I think it all comes down to how much (Spurs) will have to pay for him in the first place,” Jordan said.
“If they can get Danny Ings out of Southampton for a very limited amount of money, if Spurs can nick him, then maybe (the move could happen).

“But I don’t think Spurs are going to challenge the top six – so what is Danny Ings going to Spurs for besides the perception of Spurs?
“I don’t see that transaction as being something either side would be overly motivated by.”
According to The Athletic, Ings is likely to turn down a move to West Ham United or Aston Villa. But, if the former Liverpool striker is waiting on an offer from the very top of the Premier League, well, let’s just say he shouldn’t hold his breath.
Chelsea and Manchester United are looking elsewhere, while champions Manchester City have their heart set on an Erling Haaland or Harry Kane.
