If rumours are believed, Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign Diego Costa.
According to The Daily Star, representatives of the up-for-sale Atletico Madrid marksman have touched base with Spurs to see if they’d like to sign him.
Tottenham badly need a plan-b option for Harry Kane and with Jose Mourinho having worked with Costa at Chelsea, this one could have legs.
The Spain international has had a few ding-dong battles with the North Londoners down the years and previous comments from the former Lilywhites’ manager Mauricio Pochettino look interesting now.
The 31-year-old, who picked up 26 yellow cards in three years with the Blues, is something of a villainous figure to the opposition, a master of the dark arts.
Pochettino told AS in 2017: “Diego Costa is a player who you hate when you face him but you love when he is your team-mate. He is super competitive, with character and never likes to lose. He is proud and that is what makes him to have that ability to improve every day.
“He transmits to his team-mates the culture of winning, of not being satisfied, of always looking for more. He makes the rest better every day and he is someone anyone would want to have in his team.”
That pretty much sums up Costa, a player who’s loved by his own team-mates and truly hated by the opposition.
If he was nothing but a glorified wind-up merchant then Tottenham should give him a wide berth, but he also happens to be a brilliant goalscorer after finding the net 52 times in 89 Premier League outings.
The North Londoners have tried and failed to sign a decent back-up to Kane for years, with Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente struggling for the most part, but Costa is a huge upgrade on those two and maybe, just maybe, Mourinho should definitely consider accepting the reported offer.
