Tottenham Hotspur have succumbed to their first defeat at their new stadium as West Ham United ran out 1-0 winners in Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The first half was fairly open and Spurs had several decent efforts through Son Heung-min, who forced a save from Lukas Fabianski after being put through by Dele Alli.

Lucas Moura then rifled wide from range, while Christian Eriksen was thwarted by the Hammers goalkeeper after Son had charged down Issa Diop’s attempted clearance.

After the interval, Marko Arnautovic skilfully lofted the ball into the box for Michail Antonio, who controlled with his chest before volleying past Hugo Lloris from an angle.

Tottenham’s best chance to draw level came in stoppage time when Vincent Janssen saw a header cleared off the line by Fabian Balbuena, but Manuel Pellegrini’s side held out.

The majority of the Spurs team under-performed but Eric Dier’s display was especially concerning.

On Twitter, some of the Lilywhites faithful made their feelings known about the £4million signing:

The result leaves Tottenham third in the Premier League table, four points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who go to Leicester City on Sunday.
