Tottenham Hotspur won the Audi Cup – but face problems at right back.
Tottenham Hotspur were crowned Audi Cup winners on Wednesday evening, as they beat Bayern Munich on penalties at the Allianz Arena.
Spurs beat Real Madrid 1-0 on Tuesday to advance into the final of this pre-season tournament, and they went 2-0 up against Bayern thanks to Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen.
Bayern fought back though, with Jann-Fiete Arp pulling one back before Alphonso Davies rattled home a long-range strike to send the game to penalties.
Paulo Gazzaniga saved from both David Alaba and Jerome Boateng to hand Spurs the win, but it wasn’t all good news for Tottenham.
Defender Juan Foyth suffered an ankle injury in the second half and was stretchered off, seemingly sustaining a serious blow that could keep him out for a while.
That’s not what Mauricio Pochettino wanted to hear, as Foyth is battling Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters for the right back spot after the sale of Kieran Trippier.
Tottenham fans are cursing Foyth being injured, and believe that Spurs must now go out and sign another right back before next week’s transfer deadline.
In fact, some supporters even want Spurs to abandon their long-standing pursuit of Real Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso, feeling that a quality right back is much more important than signing Lo Celso, whilst urging Spurs to forget him and prioritise right back after Foyth’s injury.
