The Spurs ace put in a superb performance in Wednesday night’s Champions League last-16 first-leg win over Borussia Dortmund.

Tottenham Hotspur have proudly announced that defender Jan Vertonghen has been named the Champions League Player of the Week following his brilliant performance in Wednesday night’s 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.
The Belgian was shifted to a left-wing back position in the last-16 first leg at Wembley Stadium due to injuries to Ben Davies and Danny Rose, and Mauricio Pochettino’s decision paid off thanks to his impressive performance against the Bundesliga leaders.
Vertonghen delivered the cross for Son Heung-min to open the scoring in the 46th minute, before volleying in a goal of his own to double the hosts’ lead, and alongside Fernando Llorente’s contribution, Spurs now have a healthy lead going into the second leg in March.
The UEFA website had named the 31-year-old as one of the candidates for the weekly accolade, along with Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Marco Verratti and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
After Tottenham posted a Twitter message with the announcement of Vertonghen’s victory and a link to their story, some Spurs fans joined in to celebrate their player’s achievement:
Vertonghen was signed by Andre-Villas Boas for Tottenham from Ajax in July 2012 for an undisclosed fee (BBC Sport) and has gone on to make 272 appearances for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt).
