Toby Alderweireld inspired Tottenham Hotspur towards a clean sheet as Mauricio Pochettino’s men picked up the three points at the London Stadium.
Hugo Lloris may have made a number of important saves, but many Tottenham fans appear to feel that Toby Alderweireld’s performance was a key reason why Spurs managed to secure a 1-0 win away at West Ham.
Erik Lamela scored the game’s only goal as Mauricio Pochettino’s men made it four wins on the bounce in the Premier League. But Spurs were certainly made to work hard for the victory.
West Ham had more attempts and more attempts on target, but Spurs defended resolutely to hold onto their fourth clean sheet this season – all of which have come in the top flight, and three have come away from Wembley.
Alderweireld’s display provided another indication that he is definitely back to his best after a difficult campaign for the Belgian last season which saw him barely play after November.
His fitness kept him out for much of that time, but his regular absence fuelled speculation that he could be on his way out of the club in the summer. He remains, but so do the question marks over his future.
But after his display at the London Stadium, a number of fans have insisted that Tottenham need to pay Alderweireld whatever he wants to get him to sign a new contract as it is, once again, clear just how important he is to Pochettino’s side.
